Description

I used to workout with the Mayor Daley Youth Foundation Wrestling Team before it morphed into the Wildcat Wrestling Club. They used to meet at Navy Pier in downtown Chicago along with McGaw Hall at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. This is where I met Ken Kraft, coach of the NU wrestling team. At the time the Midlands had a logo I felt needed a little more passion and excitement. I offered this art to Coach Kraft and he happily accepted it and used it everywhere he could. Interestingly he even incorporated it into the Midlands team championship trophy which lasted for a number of years. I know this because when I had the good opportunity to visit Dan Gable at the Univ. of Iowa he gave me a tour of the Iowa wrestling room where all their Midlands team trophies were displayed. In addition, Gable had these wrestlers reproduced and enlarged on the wall in their wrestling room. Dan was almost as happy to finally meet me, the artist, as I was to see the art that I created decades earlier all over one of America's premier wrestling rooms. Before the tour I asked Dan to autograph my 1970 NCAA Wrestling finals ticket. It was a historical finals as it was the first time I ever saw Dan wrestle and was upset by Larry Owings of the Univ. of Washington. Dan was extremely gracious for the personal tour and autographing my Bobby Douglas book/NCAA ticket with more than just his name. Gable is pure class.
