The Story Behind The Libel Suit

As far as I'm aware this has been the largest libel lawsuit for an editorial cartoon ($12.2mil) in U.S. history. Strangely it was brought by a former state supreme court judge who accused the cartoon as being the cause for him losing his re-election to the bench. Strange for several reasons because the paper The Journal-Herald(dayton,Ohio) was not distributed state wide or even half-state wide. The strangest, was that the cartoon was not even about the former justice. It was about his brother who was the Chief Justice and who was fueding with the Ohio Bar Association. NOTE: The suit was thrown out of court as summary judgement, meaning there was NO legal basis for this suit to go to trial. Did the former justice actually expect to successfully sue somebody for their personal opinion or was he just trying to stop them damn pictures for the sake of his brother who was still on the bench? Very good, you get to go to the head of the class....!
